We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of former Chelsea Hotel resident Daniel Reich. Daniel took his own life at his parents home in Westchester, NY on Christmas Day 2012.
Daniel, who owned Daniel Reich Gallery, on West 23rd St., moved out of the Chelsea Hotel sometime around late 2011 or early 2012. After battling eviction in Housing Court, he reportedly took a small amount of money from the Chetrits in exchange for vacating his apartment.
Daniel closed his gallery in September of 2011.
While Daniel was here at the Chelsea Hotel he launched Daniel Reich temp. The temp space reinvigorated the Grand Ballroom on the lobby level. Each week, Daniel and curator Dean Dadero, hosted some of the cities edgiest art events. One memorable event featured Flawless Sabrina communicating with Andy Warhol. He also curated several informal shows in his space at the Hotel.
In 2005, we interviewed Daniel and here's what he liked best about living at the Chelsea Hotel:
"... I like it when my lights go out. It's kind of a morning drama when the person next door is using the hair dryer and my lights go out and I go downstairs in my pajamas to complain and everyone at the desk is mad. I kind of like disasters of any sort."
The Chelsea Hotel community will miss Daniel.
