Sculptor Allen Jones mentions the Chelsea in a recent issue of the London Times.
The painter and sculptor Allen Jones, 58, came to fame as a pop artist in the 1960s and is best known for his "furniture sculptures" of women in fetish gear.
We were living in New York when we found out we were going to have twins. As one of the new British pop artists, I'd been fortunate enough to enjoy some success and I'd been invited to exhibit in the States.
So my wife, Janet, who was also an artist, and I decided to live over there for a while. We found rooms at the Chelsea hotel, which was famous then as a bohemian haunt. I was even told I could pay my rent in art work. Such is the arrogance of youth that I declined and kept my paintings. (Source: London Times, Jan 1, 2006)
We're patiently waiting for Mr. Bard to say, "This month, bring me a blog post instead of a rent check." Here's a price list for a few of Jones' paintings. He certainly would not be able to make enough money from his paintings to pay his rent at the Chelsea Hotel today. We could use another nice chair in the lobby if Mr. Jones wants to make a donation.
