Only once during the 10 years that I have lived here have I overheard anyone walk in and ask the front desk folks to show them Thomas Wolfe's old room. Today's your chance to do so. It's Thomas Wolfe's birthday. He was born October 3, 1900.

Once again, the Hotel Chelsea is not part of the Open House New York tour. But don't let that stop you from checking out the Hotel lobby if you are visiting other sites in the neighborhood. I highly recommend the Jefferson Market Branch Library Watch Tower. It's worth the wait to climb 149 tiny, dusty, curving steps to reach the top. Last year, I had to wait nearly 20 minutes before I could descend because a portly gentleman was slowly making his way to the top. I feared they were going to have to call for a crane to come and dislodge him and lift him back down to the ground, but he finally made it to the top.
