Our esteemed proprietor, Stanley Bard, turns 71 today. Without Stanley Bard the Hotel would probably be just another yuppie condo building in Chelsea.
Whenever we tell people we live at the Chelsea, they invariably ask us, How the hell did you get a place there? It’s very difficult, you see, and a lot of people get turned away on a daily basis. Mr. Bard himself says, ''The way I manage this hotel I would flunk every business course I ever took, but overall I feel it enhances the value of the building.'' (New York Times, Feb 15, 1998)
Stanley Bard’s influence on the New York art world has been well documented in interviews with writers, painters, musicians, poets, and dancers. According to an e-mail I received from a former resident, Stanley is writing a book. I bet it will be worth the wait.
If you have been successful in getting Mr. Bard to let you live at the Chelsea, share your story in the comments section. Or, if you have been rejected, we'd love to hear that story too.
