The recent unearthing of an unpublished play by Jack Kerouac and an unpublished poem by the then student Tennessee Williams has inspired me to be less annoyed by my boyfriend’s obsession with rooting through the trash at the Chelsea. Here are his "literary" finds todate:
- Outtakes and/or duplicates from Doris Chases’ video The Chelsea.
- A poster autographed by beat writer Herbert Huncke. The poster contains an excerpt from Huncke’s work, "The Hospital Again." (Fair Condition.)
- Charles James’ drafting table. More about the table later.
- A Pink Guitar.
- A badly torn bunny painting by graffiti artist Hiroya.
- Art historian Helen Johnson's chair and magazine collection. The collection consists of copies of People and Ebony from the 1970s. More about this later.
- Reams of bad poetry.
- Many sketches and paintings by various artists.
- An unfinished novel about the hotel.
