Wow, a condo tower made out of metal shutters. This is a major architectural advance. And just in time too, since I was getting tired of ridiculing all the "modern" and "avant garde" glass towers that seem so popular with real estate speculators in West Chelsea these days. Maybe the shutters will keept he rain from seeping through into the apartments from the leaky glass panesl. Or maybe its to shield them from the glare (not to mention the ugliness) of all those other glass towers.
Shigeru Ban's tower represents the latest advance in the creative use of cheap, shoddy materials, and it's significant that he's famous for making things out of junk. He's created exhibition spaces out of shipping containers and shacks out of plastic beer bottle crates. Boy, that really inspires confidence. I hear the hidden elevators will be made out of paper towel rolls. Good luck on your first acutal building Shigeru! -- Ed Hamilton (Photos: curbed)
