The trees were pronounced "dead" by the city. Seems they won't make it through the winter in this state... I have my hopes though. There is a Gingko on the corner of 23rd and 10th (sort of in front of the barber shop I think) that was hacked like this at some point and it looks kind of neat. Anyway...the trees are scheduled to be replaced in the spring with redspire pear trees. That's those trees that bloom like huge white snow storms in the spring. Not my favorite tree, but nice.
