So while I was out fucking this past week, a couple of you alerted me that the Dags on 23rd [Eighth/Ninth] was closed. The place had some redeeming qualities, like having edible fruit vs. what you find at Gristedes. But it was frustrating when they couldn't get the basics right, like a reliable credit card system. And the loyalty system they rolled out last year looked kinda desperate. I would have been more loyal if they simply had friendly check out people.
Also see the recent Times article on supermarket's troubles and rising rents. With the success of Whole Foods and Fresh Direct, I tend to think the problem is simply lack of innovation.
David writes in to say half the old Dag space will be a Duane Reade. With CVS, New London, etc. nearby, that gives us five stores of this type within a three block radius. We'll officially have more pharmacies than banks.
Googling around I found this Wall Street Journal article from 2000 profiling how New London competes through differentiation. It's nice to look at this from 2006 and know they're still around.
